Senior Exemptions: If you are age 65 or older and are a registered owner of a vehicle 10 model years old or older, and if you drive less than 5,000 miles per year, you may be eligible for a senior exemption. Apply by completing a Senior Exemption Application.

When applying for a Senior Exemption, provide the following documents. Additional information may be required in order to process the Senior Exemption. Please note that (GCAF) only accepts documentation in English; documents in other languages will not be accepted.

• Proof of age. Examples include a copy of your driver’s license or birth certificate.

• Proof of ownership, which can be one of the following: last years tag receipt, this year’s registration renewal notice, or the Georgia title.

Georgia Clean Air Force (GCAF) and the Environmental Protection Division (EPD) along with the State of Georgia have mandated that emission testing be done on a yearly basis. This is to help reduce the number of heavy polluting vehicles on the roads.
The three most recent model year vehicles are exempt from being required to have  an emission inspection test done.

For registration in 2011, this includes all 2009 and newer model year vehicles (2009, 2010, and 2011) are currently exempt until January of 2012. 2012 year will require that 2009 model year cars have their emissions inspection test done.

I often get asked this question, if my check engine light is ON will I pass my emissions test? The short answer is NO in 99% of the cases you won’t. The check engine light varies in look from car brands. Some have an engine looking icon while other may say “check engine” and still some may say “service engine soon”. The only way to know what is going on with your vehicle is to have the codes read. You can do that at most auto part store like Advanced Auto Parts, O’Riellys Auto Parts, AutoZone and PepBoys for free. They will plug a device into the OB2 or On Board Diagnostics plug which is under your dash. It will then give them the codes as to what is happening with your engine. In some cases they can print it out the results so you can show it to your mechanic. If I may suggest something to you, make sure your looking at a “check engine “light and not “service due “light. Service Due lights are just generally for oil changes and basic service stuff which comes on at certain mileage intervals. That will not affect your car from passing its emissions. Another thought is if you have an older car and the gas cap is more than a few years old. Take a look to see if the rubber seal is cracked. The check engine light will come on if it is not sealing well.

Check that out, a lot of gunk and deposits get created in the engine and especially with the emissions system if you just use regular unleaded fuel. SeaFoam will do a really good job at helping to clean that stuff out.
I tell you a lot can be fixed by dumping a can a SeaFoam fuel additive in the gas tank and replacing your gas cap if it’s old.

I went by my local auto parts store recently just to get an idea of how many different kinds of fuel additives and cleaners were available. What I found was, there was over 40+ kinds of cleaners and additives like the more popular or best marketed brands STP, Techron, CRC and Slick 50. There were so many I found it to be a little daunting. Some do things like clean fuel injectors and carbs while others help raise the octane level to give better performance. My point is how do you know which one to choose. The truth is really its trial and error. Our dads would suggest Marvels Mystery Oil or Lucas Brands. Both are excellent and I have used both products, but I want to save you a little time making a choice and this is based on my experience. If I may suggest a product to try it’s called (SeaFoam) and it comes in a white can with red lettering. What it does for your car is it cleans your Fuel System, Oxygen Sensors, and Catalytic along with your valves. You can pour it directly into the fuel tank or if experienced can be poured into  your system via a vacuum line for the intake. I have seen the product sell anywhere from $6.99 to $12.00. All vehicles that are 25 model years or older are exempt from emission testing. This includes motorcycles as well as boats.
